Sweet strains of songsters through the years abound
Voices in harmony in glad refrain
Singing the ancient melodies again.
Then guided by a Celtic master's hand
Their sounds are heard with joy throughout the land
His dedicated life, though short in time
To found a choir of quality sublime
To reach perfection in a world of sound.
A century has passed, the choir still sings
Great Handel's harmonies, Bach's notes so fine
Rising in triumph on celestial wings
Bringing to countless hosts a joy divine
May the grand notes resound throughout the years
To greet in gladness, to console in tears
This sonnet was composed in September of 1998 to commemmerate the forthcomming centenary of the Liverpool Welsh Choral
Union by Miss Myfanwy Hughes.
Her father Mr Edwin Hughes was a member of the LWCU between
1900-1917, and the opening of the sonnet reflects the high regard that Miss Hughes's father
and apparently the whole choir, held for Harry Evans. He was by all accounts a very charismatic figure.
Miss Hughes then proceeds to express her appreciation of the LWCU to the present day.
